Project Description

Research Subject: Geodesy and Geoinformatics

The Navigation and Perception group at KTH is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong background and interest in navigation, signal processing, optimal estimation, and machine learning.

Our research focuses on developing next-generation navigation technologies for complex built environments and creating intelligent solutions to support a smart, sustainable, and resilient society.

Awareness of position and environmental context is crucial for applications such as location-based services (LBS), well-being promotion measures, and AI-driven decision-making. This is particularly relevant in scenarios where personal smart devices (e.g., smartphones) or autonomous perception systems operate in challenging built environments, such as indoor settings, urban areas, and even underground environments. However, achieving accurate and reliable positioning in such environments remains a significant challenge.

This PhD project aims to develop new AI-driven methods for reliable positioning and environmental perception, with a particular focus on mobile devices with limited computational resources and power supply. The research will involve sensor fusion techniques, deep learning models, and optimization strategies to enhance position awareness and situational understanding in complex and dynamic environments.

Supervision: Jingbin Liu is proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. Decisions will be made upon admission.
