Teach Future Architects at Bachelor and Master's Level
Are you interested in teaching future architects at both the bachelor and master's levels?
We are looking for one to three lecturers with a focus on teaching, where you have the opportunity to maintain a strong connection to practice. The positions are permanent full-time employment, but the extent will be specified in agreement with the applicant, at least 50%.
We are looking for candidates with a degree in architecture and extensive experience as a practicing architect, as well as a documented high level of design ability. We also require experience in teaching architecture at the college or university level, or equivalent, particularly in teaching situations that involve the development of students' design skills. Since the teaching will be conducted in both Swedish and English, it is necessary that you are proficient in both languages.
In addition to these basic requirements, we seek proficiency in the following areas:
- Building Design
- Preservation, Transformation, and Reuse
- Sustainable Transition
- Urban Planning
We would like you to have experience in several of these areas, and your application should clearly indicate which area or areas are of interest and which you wish to highlight.
Job Responsibilities
The purpose of the advertised positions is to develop teaching in the mentioned areas but also to generally strengthen the design competence in education. Teaching will primarily occur in courses within the Architecture programs (bachelor's and master's level) and the Architecture and Technology program. We also believe that the combined competence will be useful for contributions within the engineering programs, with which we are continuously increasing collaboration. Course work is teamwork and takes place in close cooperation with other teachers, supervisors, and administrators.
The main job responsibilities are:
- Course planning, organization, administration, and course development
- Course activities such as lectures, workshops, seminars, etc.
- Supervision and feedback in courses
- Assessment/examination, grading, and evaluation
- Supervision and examination of thesis projects
Teaching at the bachelor's level involves providing students with a fundamental understanding and skills within the field of architecture knowledge. Teaching at the master's level focuses on further developing and deepening students' skills and ability to critically examine and analyze ongoing discussions and trends within various areas of the architecture subject.
Qualifications
Requirements for all positions
- Degree in Architecture
- Extensive documented experience as a practicing architect
- Documented design ability (portfolio with current, relevant work samples from practice)
- Documented experience in teaching architecture, particularly focused on the development of design skills
- Demonstrate and discuss clear synergies between the development of one's own practice and teaching
- Demonstrate and discuss your approach to teaching within the subject area
- Ability to develop and integrate new knowledge and research results within the field and in teaching
- Collaboration skills and flexibility in taking on different roles in course work
- Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written
Desirable for all positions:
- Experience in course planning and course development
- Credits in higher education pedagogical courses
- Experience in development work within the field through, for example, further education or participation in research projects, publications, or exhibitions
Applicants who do not formally meet Chalmers' requirements for pedagogical education may be employed on the condition that the required pedagogical education is completed within the first two years of employment.
In addition to the basic requirements, here are specific requirements for each area:
Requirements for Building Design
Practice-oriented experience and knowledge of how to integrate form theory, building technology, and building function into a physical whole, as well as the ability to convey and communicate this in teaching situations at various levels.
Requirements for Preservation, Transformation, and Reuse:
Broad practical and theoretical orientation within the field of preservation and transformation and issues regarding the existing building stock's material, economic, social, and cultural values. Ability to develop how processes and design within preservation and transformation can look and function, as well as what roles the architect can play in these. More specifically, experience in development work regarding reuse and sustainability perspectives on preservation and transformation is requested. Knowledge of and development of building and material processes and the use of digital tools is an asset.
Requirements for Sustainable Transition
Practice-oriented experience of various types of transition processes and knowledge of what may be the architect's areas of responsibility and roles in these, both at the organizational level and a more concrete building level. More specifically, a broad orientation in practically usable tools and methods in the field, as well as experience working with circular, renewable, and innovative building technologies is requested.
Requirements for Urban Planning:
Practice-oriented experience in urban planning and architecture focused on the design of urban systems or the interaction between rural areas and cities, with knowledge of the built environment's interaction with blue and green infrastructure and transport infrastructure, as well as equitable access to resources, infrastructure, and community services.
Employment Type
The positions are permanent full-time positions, but there is an opportunity to reduce the extent of the position to part-time (but not less than 50% of full-time) to the extent that the candidate wishes and meets the needs of the operation, but the extent will be specified in agreement with the applicant. The goal is for the applicants to maintain a clear connection to practice.
The positions will be located in one of the departments of Architectural Theory and Method, Building Design, or Urban Planning.
