The Swedish National Heritage Board is the national authority that leads and supports the work of preserving, using, and developing cultural heritage. Our activities are located in Visby, Stockholm, and Tumba, and we also conduct public activities at the visitor site Glimmingehus. We have approximately 250 employees.

We are now looking for heritage scientists for the continued development of the Swedish National Heritage Board's Cultural Heritage Laboratory.

The Cultural Heritage Laboratory is part of the Unit for Cultural Heritage and Science. The unit is responsible for supporting research and knowledge building in the field of cultural heritage and for coordinating and driving issues within the interdisciplinary research area of heritage science. About 10 employees work in the unit, and the activities include the cultural heritage laboratory, a research environment for runes and rune inscriptions, as well as work with international and national standardization in cultural preservation.

The Cultural Heritage Laboratory is a research infrastructure and resource for scientific analyses within heritage science. Our mission is interdisciplinary and often requires collaborations both nationally and internationally. In order to generate knowledge that leads to an advanced practice for sustainable use and preservation of cultural heritage, we drive and participate in various R&D collaborations. Our infrastructure is also open for collaborations aimed at extracting new cultural historical knowledge with cultural heritage as a source of knowledge. Our partners come from universities, museums, other cultural heritage actors, and laboratories. The instrument park includes, among other things, SEM-EDS, XRF, X-ray, technical photography, FTIR, and Raman. The Cultural Heritage Laboratory is equipped with portable equipment, and analyses are also conducted in the field.

We run the network Heritage Science Sweden and represent Sweden in the European infrastructure initiative E-RIHS.

Your Tasks

In the role of heritage scientist, you will:

  • lead and participate in interdisciplinary research and development projects, where you will be responsible for scientific/technical expertise.
  • communicate results and work to ensure that experiences and methods are implemented by various target groups.
  • be responsible for tasks in the joint effort to drive and develop the Cultural Heritage Laboratory as a node for Heritage Science. This may include being responsible for the operation and procurement of instruments. It may also involve strategic work to promote national and international R&D collaborations, monitor and communicate relevant calls for R&D funding, or to highlight existing national resources within heritage science in the form of competencies, laboratory resources, facilities, and research environments.

Working in the Cultural Heritage Laboratory is a fun and varied job where we meet many partners and scientific questions. We are looking for someone who enjoys varied tasks and has a curious attitude towards new methods and subject areas. You want to work with our cultural heritage so that it can be preserved, used, and developed. The staff group has a mixed knowledge background where your unique combination of experiences and knowledge contributes to a collective broad competence.

You have experience participating in research and development projects in collaboration with others. You have experience communicating and disseminating results and methods, both through scientific publication and in popular science contexts.

Our official language is Swedish, so you should be proficient in both Swedish and English in speech and writing. If you have an international background, you need to be willing to learn Swedish to perform the work.

It is an advantage if you have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Knowledge of the components of different materials, degradation processes, and preservation.
  • Experience with advanced documentation methods such as X-ray, IR, and UV photography.
  • Experience with spectroscopic analysis methods such as SEM-EDS, XRF, Raman, and FTIR.
  • Experience identifying, seeking, and working with funding from various research funders.
  • Work with/in research infrastructures.
