The Machine Learning Group at Luleå University of Technology seeks a doctoral student in machine learning. We offer well-equipped laboratory facilities for research and an excellent inter-disciplinary academic network in Sweden and abroad.

Subject Description

Machine learning focuses on computational methods by which computer systems use data to improve their own performance, understanding, and to make accurate predictions and has a close connection to applications.

Project Description

This PhD project focuses on advancing the field of multi-modal data analysis and generation, integrating computer vision, natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning to enable innovative interactions with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The goal is to develop a system capable of analyzing and synthesizing multi-modal data—combining visual imagery with textual inputs—to enhance UAV capabilities in real-world applications.

This project aims to efficiently manage unannotated or partially labeled datasets by utilizing weakly-supervised and self-supervised learning, enabling scalable and cost-effective solutions. The outcome will include a proof-of-concept demo showcasing multi-modal data-driven interactions with drones.

You will also be involved in the MARTINA project. This project drives innovation and development forward through applied AI and advanced digitization to strengthen the competitiveness of the region's small and medium-sized companies.

Duties

As a PhD student, you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies and communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to your research studies. In addition, you will have the opportunity to get familiar with the role of the teacher by participating in our teaching mission.

Qualifications

We are looking for a very motivated and enthusiastic doctoral student who has:

  • A strong foundation in computer vision (e.g., object detection, image segmentation) and NLP (e.g., text reasoning, language models).
  • Knowledge of generative AI models (e.g., transformers, GANs) for text, image, or cross-modal data.
  • Familiarity with self-supervised learning and weakly-supervised learning techniques.
  • Familiarity with UAV technology or experience with embedded systems is a plus.
  • Solid programming skills in Python or similar languages.

As a person, you should have strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities. You should also have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. It’s also important that you have the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and dynamic research team.
