Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences

Department of Water and Environment

The research at the Department of Water and Environment encompasses functional microbial ecology, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, geochemical and hydrological processes, as well as aquatic environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology, which together form a unique multidisciplinary and interactive competence center for aquatic environmental research. The department consists of approximately 150 employees and has a national mission for monitoring the environmental status of lakes and watercourses. We both develop and operate advanced laboratories for chemical and biological analyses. The department offers education in environmental analysis, biology, and chemistry at both undergraduate and advanced levels in educational programs leading to, among others, agronomy, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees.

The position is placed at the Department of Microbial Ecology. The department's laboratories are located in SLU Biocentrum (https://www.slu.se/biocentrum (https://www.slu.se/biocentrum)), which is a strong research environment that combines expertise in areas such as microbiology, chemistry, biotechnology, plant biology, and aquatic biology. At Biocentrum, state-of-the-art infrastructure is offered, including equipment for microscopy, metabolomics, and molecular biology, as well as access to additional research infrastructure within molecular biosciences through SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se (https://www.scilifelab.se)).

We collaborate with other departments at SLU, as well as nationally and internationally with several strong research environments. Through our research and environmental analysis, we contribute new socially relevant knowledge about how aquatic ecosystems change and what the changes depend on.

SLU is one of the leading centers for ecological research in the Nordic countries and offers a dynamic and prominent research environment combined with modern infrastructure, which includes field research stations and research vessels. SLU's faculty-wide initiatives create opportunities for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research.
