to apply for the job
The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science (EMG) is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Molecular Ecology or a related field. The position is full-time for 2 years and 10 months, with a start date of September 1, 2026, or by agreement. The application deadline is July 31, 2026.
Project Description and Responsibilities
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher for the project "Rapid Detect—Transboundary Action: Fast Species Detection using LAMP" at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science (EMG), led by University Lecturer Anu Valtonen. This project is a collaboration between Umeå University, University of Eastern Finland, University of Oulu, and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE), funded by Interreg Aurora. The project aims to apply LAMP, a molecular method for species identification and detection, to species that are invasive or threatened in northern Fennoscandia.
The appointed researcher will be responsible for laboratory work and further developing the method for practical use in ecology and conservation biology. Key tasks include testing newly designed primer sets on samples from various tissues and substrates, as well as extracting DNA from these substrates as needed. A key goal of Rapid Detect is to engage relevant stakeholders. The postdoctoral researcher will play a crucial role in simplifying the method for external partners, creating guidelines, and eventually organizing webinars and practical workshops. Samples will be obtained via partners where possible, and the postdoctoral researcher will be partially responsible for sample collection in Sweden.
Qualifications
To be employed as a postdoctoral researcher, a doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made. According to the postdoctoral agreement, preference is given to candidates who obtained their degree within the last three years, unless special circumstances (e.g., illness, parental leave, union duties, national service, or clinical service) apply.
The doctoral degree should be in molecular biology, ecology, or a related field. We are seeking a person with a strong interest in practical applications of molecular biology and enthusiasm for developing new experimental methods. The following qualifications are required:
- Experience with relevant DNA extraction and amplification methods (LAMP experience is desirable but not mandatory).
- Experience in independently performing and coordinating laboratory work and purchasing laboratory materials.
- Understanding of the practical aspects of molecular field monitoring methods.
- Ability to communicate clearly and plan together with project partners and non-specialists, both online and in person.
- Creativity in problem-solving when handling new materials or deviating from established protocols.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills.
Merits
We do not expect the selected candidate to master all the following from the start, but they should be eager to acquire relevant skills or knowledge. The following are considered merits:
- Experience in field sampling or species monitoring.
- Involvement in science communication and information campaigns.
- Familiarity with Swedish ecological monitoring institutes or companies.
- Knowledge of threatened and/or invasive alien species in northern Fennoscandia.
On a personal level, we are looking for someone who can take responsibility for their own independent work while collaborating smoothly with partners across multiple institutes. We would like you to:
- Be able to organize and structure your work.
- Deliver results as agreed.
- Be proactive, engaged, and willing to show and take initiative.
- Be interested in sharing your knowledge.
Application
A complete application, written in Swedish or English, should include:
- A cover letter (max 2 pages) describing how your previous research background fits this postdoc project.
- A curriculum vitae (CV) with a publication list.
- A certified copy of the doctoral degree certificate, or documentation proving when the doctoral degree is expected to be awarded.
- Certified copies of certificates from higher education.
- A copy of the doctoral thesis (including included articles).
References will be provided in connection with a possible interview. Applications are submitted through our electronic recruitment system. Documents sent electronically must be in Word or PDF format. The application deadline is July 31, 2026.
