Job Description

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who wants to contribute to the transition towards tomorrow's circular industry through research on circular manufacturing systems and resource-efficient production solutions.

The research is conducted at the Department of Production Development at KTH and aims to support the manufacturing industry's transition from linear to circular value chains. The project is based on a life cycle perspective where products, components, and materials retain their value through reuse, remanufacturing, and reintegration into production.

The position primarily involves further developing the research from the iReGear project in close collaboration with TRATON Group R&D. The focus is on how remanufactured transmission components can be integrated into production systems for new heavy vehicles and how circularity can be scaled up in industrial applications. The work includes analysis and development of component and material flows, as well as identifying opportunities for reuse, reworking, and remanufacturing, while taking into account technical, quality, and operational requirements. The candidate is also expected to contribute to other ongoing and upcoming research initiatives.

This position is part of KTH's PROCEED initiative for research activities in Södertälje, which offers a unique opportunity for research collaboration with Traton/Scania and AstraZeneca. To enable close collaboration and cooperation, regular physical presence in Södertälje is included as an important part of the position. The position offers good opportunities to build a strong international network, develop your own research, and contribute to the industry's green transition.

Qualifications

Requirements

• A completed PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than at the time the employment decision is made.
• The candidate must have a PhD in engineering, as well as a master's and bachelor's degree in production, manufacturing, industrial economics/industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a corresponding field.
• The successful candidate has academic publications in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals, preferably within circular economy and/or production technology.
• The ability to lead interdisciplinary work and coordinate complex efforts from different research disciplines, collaborating organizations, and projects is crucial.
• The candidate has the ability to generate research ideas and use them to formulate research proposals to secure funding.

Merits

• At the last day of application, no more than three years since the PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD was awarded.
• Documented research experience in circular manufacturing systems, or a strong interest in the field.
• Experience in manufacturing, remanufacturing, or circular production systems is meritorious.
• Experience in research and innovation projects, including project development, research proposals, consortium building, and planning of activities and resources.
• Experience in project management and participation in national or international research projects, especially EU-funded projects, is meritorious. Industrial experience from production environments is highly valued.
• Good ability to work in cross-functional and international teams, as well as very good knowledge of English, as it is part of the daily work.
• Experience of collaboration with industry and other stakeholders, as well as the ability to communicate and disseminate research results to different target groups, is meritorious.
• Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
• Good teamwork skills and the ability to work independently.

About the Position

The employment is permanent, but for a maximum of two years.

A postdoctoral position is a time-limited merit-based employment with a main focus on research, intended as a first career step after the PhD defense.
