Acting Gardener for the Botanical Garden at Lund University

The Botanical Garden (LUBT) is to be a center for knowledge about botany and horticulture based on scientific foundations. The garden should be an attractive and accessible place for research, teaching, recreation, and inspiration. Extensive national and international work on plant conservation and biodiversity is also carried out here.

The Botanical Garden houses approximately 7,000 different plant species in open ground and in our greenhouses. With over half a million visitors every year, the garden is an important meeting place where high demands are placed on quality, safety, and experience value.

The Position

The greenhouses at the Botanical Garden contain climate sections with plants from all over the world – from desert environments and subtropical collections to tropical rainforests and endangered species. The greenhouse is currently undergoing extensive renovation and development. This means you will be entering an exciting phase where large parts of the greenhouse environments are being built up and re-established.

We are now looking for an acting gardener who wants to help develop the greenhouse environments of the future together with us.

The position involves both practical and coordinating work, with a focus on plant care, development, and establishment of new environments in the newly renovated greenhouse.

Responsibilities

  • Plant care and establishment of plant material
  • Involvement in the construction and development of greenhouse environments
  • Work coordination in daily operations
  • Responsibility for the work environment in daily work within the team
  • Pest control and preventive plant protection work
  • Documentation of plant collections in the database
  • Operation and troubleshooting regarding greenhouse technology and climate control
  • Purchasing and administrative tasks
  • Participation in the planning and implementation of ongoing renovation and development projects
  • Participation in meetings with property owners, contractors, and consultants
  • Organize the work of testing new substrates, planning placement and logistics for the reintroduction of plants, and solving problems in a newly established environment

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have:

  • At least a 3-year approved horticultural education
  • At least 2 years of experience working in tropical and subtropical greenhouses
  • Substantial plant knowledge and a strong botanical interest
  • Good knowledge of different types of substrates and plant beds, as well as experience of how different plant groups are established and developed in varying cultivation environments
  • Experience in practical greenhouse work and plant establishment
  • Documented experience in handling various plant collections in new and temporary environments
  • Experience with greenhouse technology and climate control
  • Basic computer skills
  • Category B driver's license

It is meritorious if you have:

  • Experience with greenhouse technology and climate control in Priva
  • Lift certificate
  • Experience in leadership or coordinating responsibilities
  • Specialized knowledge in botany, horticulture, or ecology

Personal Qualities

To thrive and succeed in the role, you need to be engaged, flexible, and quality-conscious. You find it easy to collaborate and create involvement in the work group, while being confident in making decisions and prioritizing during periods of high tempo.

You are proactive and have an interest in developing greenhouse environments and plant collections over time. Since the operations are in a development phase, we would appreciate that you value change work and enjoy combining practical work with planning and development.

The work involves heavy lifting and weekend work.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
