Responsibilities

MDU is recruiting a temporary Environmental Coordinator to coordinate the university-wide work with the university's environmental management system and direct environmental impact. The Environmental Coordinator will belong to the Department of Infrastructure and Safety, which is responsible for providing an open, safe and sustainable education and research environment.

The Environmental Coordinator shall coordinate the university's overall environmental management system with both the education and research taking place at the university's institutions and faculties, and with occupational health and safety, local development and security issues.

Among the responsibilities, special mention can be made of:

  • Act as a support to the university's institutions and faculties and to the common operational support in their work to achieve the goals in the university's policy for the environment and reduced climate footprint, respectively the policy for sustainable development, as well as the Swedish University and College Association's climate framework including its example collection.
  • Manage and develop the university's environmental management system according to ISO 14001:2015, which means working with routines, environmental mapping, compliance with legal requirements, environmental audits, training, central follow-up, as well as internal and external reporting regarding, among other things, energy use, waste issues, food and catering, travel and transport.
  • Provide expert support regarding laws and other requirements in the area.
  • Development projects related to the environment and reduced climate footprint, in collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders, e.g., regarding green transition and sustainable buildings.
  • Assist in the implementation of procurement at the university.
  • Internal and external communication.
  • Collaborate with other higher education institutions and with, for example, county administrative boards and municipalities' sustainability work.
  • Develop a coordination function for chemical management at the higher education institution.
  • Lead implementation projects regarding a climate budget.

The work is characterized by great flexibility and freedom under responsibility, with some peaks in workload. The position is located in Västerås. Travel between MDU's campuses in Västerås and Eskilstuna occurs.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have:

  • An academic degree focused on the sustainability/environmental area that the employer considers relevant for the position.
  • The ability to express yourself well in speech and writing, both in Swedish and in English.
  • Experience of environmental and/or sustainability work in a larger and complex organization, preferably in the public sector or at a university or college.
  • Experience of working with environmental management systems and is accustomed to developing routines, following up on goals and driving systematic improvement work.
  • Experience of coordinating and supporting different operations and functions, as well as leading or participating in projects and development efforts within the environment, climate or sustainable development.
  • Experience of previous work with follow-up and reporting of environmental and climate-related key figures and feel confident in communicating, training and giving advice within the area.
  • Experience of having worked with environmental issues.
  • Experience of having previously implemented projects.

To succeed in the role requires a very good ability to absorb, analyze and produce complex texts, such as policy documents, routines, reports and decision support materials. You need to be confident in presenting and conveying information orally to both small and large groups and able to adapt the message to the target audience. The work also requires good project management skills, where you can independently plan, carry out and follow up on tasks and development efforts in collaboration with different stakeholders.

You should have a good ability to organize and structure your work. You should also have the ability to see the big picture and to inspire and create involvement.
