Correctional Officer at Halmstad Prison – 15 Positions
The Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and are now seeking more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation services, remand prisons, and client transport.
Halmstad Prison is a closed prison in the second-highest security class. The prison employs 160 staff members, most of whom are correctional officers. The facility is located five kilometers west of the city center, right next to the Flygstadens commercial area in Halmstad. The distance to Halmstad city center is approximately 10-15 minutes by bus or bicycle.
A remand prison is currently being built on the prison grounds, with a planned inauguration in spring/summer 2027. This increase in capacity will double the Prison and Probation Service's operations in Halmstad.
Job Responsibilities
As a correctional officer, you are a central part of the security work and part of a team that contributes to safety and order. The role involves meeting and guiding clients and motivating them towards a life without crime. The work is varied but also relies on recurring routines that create the structure and predictability needed by both clients and the organization.
As a correctional officer, you are the one who opens the cell door in the morning and locks it in the evening. You escort inmates to work and education and supervise the exercise yard and gym. A large part of your workday involves security and control measures, such as cell and body searches and drug testing, while also ensuring clients are provided with necessities during the day.
Qualifications
Your personal qualities are crucial. The work can be both physically and mentally demanding; therefore, you need to be stable and secure in your interactions with deprived-of-liberty individuals. The job requires endurance over time and the ability to stand firm even when daily life tests your patience and energy.
You have a genuine interest in working with people and treat everyone with respect and dignity, while acting as a good role model and supporting positive change for our inmates. You are aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect individuals and can adapt quickly if the situation requires it.
You have good physical fitness and can react quickly and with endurance if the situation demands it. You have the ability to balance security awareness with a caring approach. You have good judgment and make well-founded decisions even in stressful situations. You find it easy to collaborate and communicate clearly even in challenging situations, while prioritizing safety together with your colleagues. You enjoy working in a structured manner and see the value in a routine-driven daily life.
