Captain for free-running ferry summer 2026 east coast Job Responsibilities

Are you passionate about safe and environmentally friendly shipping like we are? Are you an initiative-taking, open, and communicative person with a high degree of service orientation? We are now looking for dedicated staff for our yellow road ferries - join us in making Sweden closer. The ferry company is undergoing a transformation process towards electrification, climate adaptation, automation, and digitalization, where you will play an important role in this journey of change. We are currently seeking captains for summer service on some of our ferry routes in the Stockholm archipelago and Öregrund.

The position includes standard captain duties. As a captain, you have reporting responsibilities in the event of incidents, accidents, and other deviations. You are also responsible for ensuring that the ferry is seaworthy and properly manned.

Qualifications

Our free-running ferries have a two-person crew, and you will work closely with the engineer/mate, which places high demands on teamwork. Onboard the ferry, you are also our face to the public, which requires a high degree of service orientation. With an analytical problem-solving ability, you see what needs to be done and act accordingly.

You are motivated by active participation where you responsibly take charge of your tasks while being aware of how you are part of and contribute to the whole by collaborating with others.

We are looking for someone who

  • holds at least a Class VI vessel command certificate for inland waters, engineer B degree, or Class VIII engineer certificate
  • has a valid special qualification in crisis management (CCM) according to STCW Manila
  • has completed basic safety training according to STCW Manila
  • has a valid medical certificate for seafarers with deck service, at least for inland waters
  • holds at least an SRC certificate
  • is accustomed to using digital tools and support systems
  • speaks and writes Swedish fluently
  • has Swedish/Nordic/Swiss/EU citizenship

It is an advantage if you

  • hold at least a Class III vessel command certificate
  • have higher qualifications/training or other experience that we consider relevant
  • have experience working on road ferries

At the Swedish Transport Administration's ferry company, you contribute to ensuring that 22 million passenger trips and 13 million vehicle transports occur as efficiently, sustainably, and safely as possible each year. The ferry company is Sweden's largest with around 70 road ferries operating over 40 ferry routes. When the water freezes in the northern parts of our country, we are also responsible for the operation and maintenance of ice roads.
