Second Ship Engineer
based in Norrköping
The Swedish Maritime Administration's icebreakers play a crucial role in keeping maritime traffic moving during the winter months. Through icebreaker assistance, we ensure that commercial shipping can navigate even under difficult ice conditions in our fairways. During the ice-free part of the year, the icebreakers contribute to other important tasks such as fairway maintenance, repairs of maritime safety devices, and other technical interventions along the coast. We are now looking for a second ship engineer who wants to be part of the crew on board and contribute to this important mission!
Job Responsibilities
As a second ship engineer, you will work closely with the technical manager and the chief ship engineer on the technical operation and maintenance of the vessel. The job also includes watchkeeping during the icebreaker season. Furthermore, the work is carried out in accordance with the vessel's quality and maintenance systems. If necessary, you may also act as the chief ship engineer.
You will be employed by the Swedish Maritime Administration's Shipping Company, which means you may also serve on other vessels within the fleet. We are currently looking for a second ship engineer for the Icebreaker.
Who are you?
To be considered for the role of second ship engineer, you must meet the following requirements according to STCW Manila:
• Minimum qualification of engine officer class V
• Valid medical certificate for seafarers
• Certificate of basic safety training
• Certificate of advanced firefighting
• Certificate of basic medical training
• Certificate for survival craft and rescue boats
• Good ability to express yourself in Swedish and English, both orally and in writing
It is advantageous if you have:
• Degree in engine officer class II or higher
At least 1 year of experience in the position.
• Experience with electrical work
• Worked with ISM and quality systems
• Experience from working in icebreaker operations

How and when?
This recruitment is for a permanent position expected to be filled in the spring of 2026.
The Swedish Maritime Administration may apply a six-month probationary period.
The position may involve military placement at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
The position may require Swedish citizenship. Security clearance with background check may be conducted before an employment offer.
