Research Engineer in High Power Microwaves

FOI, the Total Defence Research Institute, is one of Europe's leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence, tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations for total defense, as well as supporting disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. Our operations are carried out on behalf of primarily the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have approximately 1,400 employees, of which over 1,000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and engineering to social and political sciences.

We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!

About the Position

We are looking for a research engineer to our team researching high power microwaves (HPM). High power microwaves work by exposing electronic systems to strong pulsed microwave radiation with the aim of causing disruptions or destroying the systems. At FOI, we work with the entire chain - from generating microwaves to developing methods for testing electronic equipment and its vulnerability to the strong pulsed microwave radiation.

Currently, we primarily need reinforcement for the development of testing methods, where a large part of the work revolves around methods for ModVäxlande Kammare (MVK). Experimental development of microwave sources and microwave measurement technology will also be relevant for the position.

Your work will largely be experimental but will also include method development. Some examples of tasks include:

  • Development of testing methodologies.
  • Conducting experiments and analyzing results.
  • Development or modification of software for equipment control and data analysis.

To succeed in this role, you need to have a good understanding of electromagnetic field theory and basic statistics. You must enjoy working in a laboratory environment and handling various measuring instruments such as network analyzers.

About the Unit

In the unit for electromagnetic weapons, energy, and detection, we work with high power microwaves, laser weapons, energy supply for military purposes, and detection of molecules involved in various types of explosives. The work spans from basic theory and simulation to experiments, data collection, and data analysis. To the extent possible, we also publish our results at scientific conferences and in the scientific literature.

The picturesque Grindsjön is located on Södertörn, about 40 kilometers south of Stockholm. There are SL bus connections with Tumba, Västerhaninge, and Ösmo/Nynäshamn. You will be part of the unit for Electromagnetic Weapons and Energy, which belongs to the department of Weapons, Protection, and Security.

Do you have the competence profile we need?

Requirements

As a person, you thrive in a team environment and have good collaboration skills and can communicate well. The ability to be self-driven in your work approach is something we highly value. We place great importance on your personal qualities.

Meritorious

  • Documented experimental experience in microwave technology and measurement technology.
  • Experience in developing software for instrument control.
  • Driver's license (B).
