Research Leader in the Energy Field

FOI, the Total Defence Research Institute, is one of Europe's leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence, tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations for total defense, as well as supporting disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. The activities are conducted on behalf of, primarily, the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have approximately 1400 employees, of which more than 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and technology to social and political sciences.

Would you like to contribute your expertise to investigate how we can design fixed and mobile facilities regarding energy supply? At FOI, we work on research for a safer world. We are now looking for a new colleague in the energy field.

About the Position

What do you contribute to our work?

In the role of researcher in the energy field, you will work on investigations that analyze facilities and systems from the perspective of energy supply. Specific applications include energy solutions for bunker facilities, performance evaluation of various energy storage systems, and mapping of energy needs. The work is both of a theoretical investigative nature and also experimental, often through self-developed experimental setups.

The role also includes strategic work to identify new questions and further develop existing ones, based on the long-term needs of the clients. In this way, the role contributes to advancing the research area.

FOI's operations in the workgroup are primarily project-funded. Common clients include the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, and the Fortifications Agency. The role as a researcher in the energy field includes project management responsibility for projects of varying complexity that must be conducted in accordance with FOI's project model. The work is carried out in both large and small projects, which means that you will work both independently and collaboratively in a group. The workgroup has access to labs and equipment to carry out most experimental assignments requested in the area. We collaborate with various national and international research organizations, which may involve travel.

About the Unit

You will be part of the Electromagnetic Weapons and Energy unit, which belongs to the Weapons, Protection, and Security department. Please read more about what we do: Weapons, Protection, and Security - Total Defence Research Institute - FOI (https://www.foi.se/jobba-hos-oss.html)

We offer internal project management courses and specific courses to handle the particular risks that occur in our operations.

The picturesque Grindsjön is located in Södertörn, about 40 km south of Stockholm. There are SL bus connections to Tumba, Västerhaninge, and Ösmo/Nynäshamn.

Do you have the competence profile we need?

Requirements

We are looking for someone who has a PhD in energy technology, energy systems, or equivalent. You have at least one year of work experience, both experimentally and theoretically, in development and research-oriented work focused on energy systems and components, or equivalent knowledge. You have good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written. To succeed in the role of researcher, you are proactive and have the ability to solve complex problems within the given framework of your assignment. You have good communication skills, are stable as a person, and can easily adapt to new situations. As the work involves several contacts both internally and externally, we see that you have very good collaborative skills. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.

Meritorious

It is advantageous if you have experience from experimental work, such as designing experimental setups to verify hypotheses. It is also advantageous if you have experience in participating in and driving dialogues with clients to capture current needs and identify new projects.
