We are looking for a PhD candidate in wireless communication and computer vision.

Your tasks

Point clouds (PC) are unordered sets of three-dimensional (3D) data points and their attributes, which together represent an object or a scene. This data structure plays a critical role in distributed autonomous systems, enabling applications such as augmented reality, self-driving vehicles, and measurements for climate analysis. These applications rely on distributed sensors that capture PCs and wirelessly transmit them to edge servers for subsequent algorithms such as registration, i.e., simultaneous fitting of multiple point clouds to a common 3D coordinate system. Current methods handle PC transmission and registration as separate modules, which is suboptimal for both latency and registration accuracy. This project instead employs a co-design approach that integrates wireless communication, computer vision, and machine learning to optimize PC transmission from sensors to an edge server for registration. The research is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

You will be part of WASP's graduate school, which offers a wide range of courses and a network with the participating universities, as well as AI companies from across Sweden. As a PhD candidate, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have a master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Applied Mathematics, or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Applied Mathematics, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way. The degree requirement must be fulfilled at the time the employment contract is signed.

Applicants must have excellent mathematical maturity and programming skills, as well as very good proficiency in English, both spoken and written. We also seek the ability to work independently and to formulate and address technical and scientific questions.

Your workplace

You will be placed in the Department of Communication Systems (KS) but will also collaborate with researchers in the Department of Computer Vision (CVL). Both departments offer dynamic and vibrant research environments within the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY).

The Department of Communication Systems conducts research and education at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels in areas such as communication technology, statistical signal processing, network technology, and decentralized machine learning. The Department of Computer Vision focuses on research and education in machine learning for computer vision at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. About the employment

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here.

The employment is temporary for four years full-time. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Extension of employment up to five years may occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental assignments. In special cases, further extension may occur.

Start date by agreement, but no earlier than August 11, 2025.

A security check may be conducted before a decision on employment is made.
