PhD Position in Business Administration

The Department of Economics, Geography, Law, and Tourism operates at Campus Sundsvall and Campus Östersund. The activities include research and education in the fields of: business administration, law, economics, statistics, geography, and tourism studies.

Business administration is one of the largest subjects at Mid Sweden University, with approximately equal operations in Sundsvall and Östersund.

The subject offers education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including a master's program with two specializations: marketing & business development and accounting & finance. Contract education is also provided. The business administration research in Sundsvall has a special connection to the Center for Research on Economic Relations (CER), focusing on areas such as banking and finance, accounting and auditing, as well as marketing and strategic networks. The research in Östersund is profiled towards entrepreneurship, business development, and tourism.

The advertised position is linked to the specializations of the master's program, and broadly speaking, the PhD project should be related to the areas of marketing & business development or accounting & finance. The specific focus of the work will be formulated in consultation with the supervisor.

For the position, it is advantageous if the applicant can perform economic calculations. The position also requires familiarity with empirical studies, as a significant part of the research is conducted in collaboration with actors in the surrounding community. It is of great importance that the PhD student can contribute to the activities conducted within the business administration subject, including education and administration, and to the doctoral education environment by being present at the stationing location. The position is intended to lead to a doctoral degree.

Job Responsibilities:

Research studies (80%) and administration and/or teaching (20%) over five years.

Eligibility:

Basic eligibility is granted to those who have completed a degree at the advanced level or have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level or acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways within or outside the country. Specific eligibility is granted to those who have at least 90 higher education credits in business administration or have acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways within or outside the country.

Assessment Criteria:

Selection among applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be made with regard to the applicants' ability to benefit from the doctoral education. Selection will be based on the following criteria: For the position, documented aptitude for research is required, demonstrated in the bachelor's and/or master's thesis and other written achievements, as well as a good ability to work independently. The application must be accompanied by a project outline (maximum four A4 pages), which should include a dissertation idea and a proposed plan for how the idea can be implemented.

Employment and Start Date

The PhD position corresponds to an employment of five years and is expected to lead to a doctoral degree. In addition to research studies, which comprise 80% of full-time, teaching and administrative work of 20% will be included in the position, corresponding to a full-time position. If the pace of study in the doctoral education changes, the employment period will change accordingly.

A new employment as a PhD student is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. Regulations regarding employment as a PhD student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

Start date is October 1, 2025, or by agreement.

Salary:

The starting salary is determined according to a locally negotiated salary scale for PhD students at Mid Sweden University.
