PhD Student in Flexible X-ray Detectors
We are looking for a PhD student who wants to work with flexible X-ray detectors based on new high-Z covalent organic framework materials in a joint project involving four research groups from three different universities. The position is located in the Surface Physics and Chemistry group at the Laboratory for Organic Electronics.
Your Responsibilities
Flexible X-ray detectors represent a future technology with applications in several scientific, medical, and technological fields. Our joint project, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, aims to realize flexible X-ray detectors by developing new high-Z covalent organic framework materials (COF) that can meet the critical requirements for flexibility, X-ray absorption capability, and charge transport. You will assist in the COF development through advanced characterization techniques performed internally and at synchrotron light/spallation sources, develop and refine the deposition of COF films, construct interfaces to limit detection-limiting defects, and perform design and manufacturing of components. You will work alongside chemists, materials scientists, and component physicists to carry out your research, which will involve close and regular interaction with the other participating research groups at Linköping University (led by Prof. Feng Gao), Chalmers University of Technology (led by Prof. Eva Olsson), and Uppsala University (led by Prof. Sascha Ott).
Your Qualifications
You have a Master's degree in Materials Science, Applied Physics, Physical Chemistry, or Nanoscience, or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level in Materials Science, Applied Physics, Physical Chemistry, or Nanoscience, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.
Desired personal skills and attributes for the position include high motivation, ambition, problem-solving ability, and collaboration skills. Research at the Laboratory for Organic Electronics is primarily conducted in English, so relatively good English skills are advantageous. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.
Your Workplace
At the Laboratory for Organic Electronics (LOE), we explore the electronic and optical properties of organic semiconductors, forest-derived biomaterials, and hybrid organic materials. We share a common interest in utilizing the combination of electronic and ionic charge transport for applications in healthcare, biology, energy, and the Internet of Things. Our research topics include synthesis, catalysis, materials science, theory and modeling, component physics, nanotechnology, photonics, biotechnology, and system design. Our activities range from fundamental research to commercialization. LOE currently has about 150 researchers and graduate students distributed across 13 independent research groups, each led by a principal investigator. Read more at www.liu.se/loe (http://www.liu.se/loe).
The Surface Physics and Chemistry group is led by Professor Mats Fahlman together with Associate Professor Xianjie Liu. We conduct fundamental research in areas that positively impact the world. We use advanced characterization techniques to explore the unique properties and phenomena that arise at the interfaces of materials where atoms and molecules meet and interact in solid, liquid, or gas phases, which often dictate the functionality of both coatings and components. Our current research interests involve organic and hybrid organic semiconductors such as π-conjugated materials, metal-halide perovskites, and COF, as well as their applications in energy harvesting, optoelectronics, and bioelectronics.
Linköping University (LiU) conducts world-leading, interdisciplinary research in areas such as materials science, IT, and life science technology. LiU is one of the largest universities in Sweden, with 40,000 students and 4,500 employees. Students are among the most sought after in the job market, and international rankings consistently place LiU as a leading global university. Read more at www.liu.se (http://www.liu.se).
