We harness the power of over 40,000 students and staff. Students who provide hope for the future. Employees who contribute every day to Linköping University tackling contemporary challenges. Our values are based on credibility, trust, and security. By being courageous, thinking freely, and innovating, we collectively create a better future through both large and small actions. Welcome to apply for a job with us!

We are now seeking a postdoctoral researcher in generative AI-based data synthesis for energy modeling of buildings, located at the Department of Technology and Natural Sciences, Division of Media and Information Technology, Campus Norrköping. The postdoc will work on a newly initiated interdisciplinary project focusing on exploring AI-based generation and use of synthetic data to improve predictions of building energy performance and develop methods for responsible use of AI.

Your tasks

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be part of a research project funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, which explores the use of synthetic data created with generative models for the Swedish built environment, aiming to improve energy predictions and peak load management in heating systems while counteracting bias. The research will focus on generative AI to synthesize data related to energy use. This interdisciplinary project integrates technical advancements in AI-based data synthesis with socio-technical and ethical methods and offers a unique opportunity to address both technical challenges and broader societal implications.

Specifically, your tasks will include:

  • Reviewing the current data landscape for energy use modeling.
  • Visualizing the distribution and characteristics of the collected energy use dataset.
  • Exploring, implementing, and evaluating AI modeling methods to synthesize energy-related data.
  • Investigating visual analysis methods to enhance model understanding and detect potential bias.
  • Working closely with other team members and relevant stakeholders, as well as participating in interdisciplinary research that combines technical, socio-technical, and ethical aspects of energy use and synthetic data.

A postdoctoral researcher primarily conducts research. Teaching may also be included in the tasks, but to a maximum of one-fifth of the working time.

Your qualifications

To be eligible for the position of postdoctoral researcher, you must have a PhD or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD. Your degree should be completed by the time the employment decision is made. It is advantageous if your degree was completed no more than three years before the application deadline for this position. If there are special reasons, those who obtained their PhD earlier may also be considered, for example, due to various types of statutory leave.

We are looking for candidates with a PhD in computer science, visualization and media technology, machine learning, or a related research area. A strong background in machine learning and visual data analysis is expected, along with a solid publication record in relevant, high-quality journals and conferences. Excellent oral and written English skills are a requirement.

We seek a self-motivated person who takes initiative and can work both independently and in a team. The ability to appreciate and value interdisciplinary research and multicultural teams is essential.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

Your workplace

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the research group for information visualization (iVis, https://ivis.itn.liu.se/ (https://ivis.itn.liu.se/)) and collaborate closely with the research group for computer graphics and image processing, as well as work with researchers from the Department of Tema. The iVis group focuses on exploratory analysis and visualization of large and often complex datasets, for example, within environmental research, transport systems, social sciences, and artificial intelligence. The research group for computer graphics and image processing (CGIP, https://liu.se/en/research/computer-graphics-and-image-processing (https://liu.se/en/research/computer-graphics-and-image-processing)) conducts research on developing theory and methodology for data synthesis, sparse representation learning, deep learning, fairness aspects in generative models, as well as projects related to image capture and image analysis.

About the position

The position is a fixed-term employment for two years with the possibility of extension for a total employment period of no more than three years. The postdoctoral position is full-time.

Start date by agreement.

The position may be classified in a security class. If so, a security review with background check will be conducted before a decision on employment is made.
