About the Job
Your main tasks will consist of field activities distributed among the unit's projects. As field staff, you will perform tasks such as inventorying freshwater pearl mussels, fishing at sea, electrofishing, and combating invasive aquatic and terrestrial species. Some positions include coordination tasks with our coordinator in the unit, pre- and post-work in the project's field activities, and other operational tasks.
The main projects for the 2025 field season involve work with the endangered freshwater pearl mussel within the EU project Rivers of LIFE and other restoration projects in the unit, combating invasive aquatic species in the sea and invasive terrestrial species in Natura 2000 areas. Other smaller projects are also ongoing in various locations in the county where the field team is involved.
The field team is based at the County Administrative Board's premises in Gävle, but several projects involve weekly overnight stays in other parts of the county, usually 3–4 nights in a row per trip. The County Administrative Board arranges accommodation during these weeks, which may occur consecutively during certain periods of employment (we do not work weekends).
The work includes wading in flowing water with underwater goggles and heavy lifting in awkward terrain. Part of the work involves fishing with nets and other equipment, as well as possible electrofishing. You may need to reverse with a trailer and operate a boat at sea, sometimes in rough waters. The length of the workday is often determined by the size of the catch for the day. The work includes maintenance of the boat, equipment, and other gear. Office work also occurs on certain days.
About You
We are looking for someone who is driven, responsible, and can solve problems that arise. It is important that you have good collaboration skills and are flexible and self-sufficient. You are quality-conscious, stable, and proactive.
You must have the stamina to walk in rough terrain, wade in flowing water for a large part of the day, possibly snorkel, and carry field equipment to and from the field area. You must have the ability to live in another location during parts of the employment period, as there may be several work weeks in a row far from Gävle.
The following competencies are meritorious:
- Post-secondary education in natural sciences with relevant focus, or other education or work experience that we consider equivalent.
- Fieldwork in the areas included in the tasks.
- Previous experience of fieldwork in a government agency.
- Knowledge of species of flora and fauna, especially fish.
- Boat driving license and experience with boats.
- Electrofishing certification and experience in electrofishing.
- Knowledge of Excel and GIS, preferably with extensive experience in ArcGIS PRO.
- Experience with the applications Fieldmaps and Survey 123.
We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.
A driving license (B) is a requirement, but other licenses are considered meritorious.
Interviews are conducted on an ongoing basis, so do not delay your application.
Do you want to influence the future of Gävleborg and be a part of us? Welcome with your application no later than March 21.
