The Competence Centre for Multilingualism works to ensure that students have the opportunity to receive instruction in their mother tongue as well as study guidance in the language they master best. Currently, 38 different languages are represented within our operations. We collaborate with both municipal and independent school authorities, covering the range from preschool class to upper secondary school.
Students who have at least one guardian with a mother tongue other than Swedish are given the opportunity to study their language as a separate school subject. Through mother tongue instruction, students strengthen their multilingualism, develop their identity, and build pride in their language and background.
We are now looking for a Mother Tongue Teacher in Ukrainian!
Employment Information
This is a fixed-term appointment, part-time 15%, where the extent may change. Planned start date 2026-08-10, ending 2026-12-31.
Your Responsibilities
The role of a mother tongue teacher is a dynamic and varied position where the student base dictates the planning. You will visit various schools throughout the municipality – both in central areas and in outer districts – to meet students in their school environment.
Responsibilities may include:
- Mother tongue instruction
- Study guidance in the mother tongue
- Remote teaching and remote guidance
- Language support initiatives in collaboration with the Reception Unit Hej Umeå
Mother tongue instruction takes place in groups or individually within the municipality's schools, from preschool class to grade 9, primarily on afternoons outside the regular timetable. Students in grades F–3 receive in-person instruction at their home school, while students from grade 4 may receive instruction at another school unit. Bus passes are offered if travel between schools is required. Remote teaching may occur for students in outer districts from grade 2 onwards. The work is independent and includes planning, implementation, grading, and evaluation according to the Swedish national curriculum.
Study guidance involves supporting students in grades 1–9 as well as those in the Language Introduction program in upper secondary school. Guidance can take place before, during, or after lesson hours. You will collaborate closely with mentors and subject teachers, who are responsible for planning, while you provide support in the mother tongue to strengthen the student's knowledge development.
This may also include support for the Hej Umeå Reception Unit when receiving newly arrived students, for example through information meetings and assessments.
About You
We are looking for someone who is creative, self-motivated, and flexible, and who thrives in a dynamic work environment. You are curious and have a strong desire to both contribute to development and grow yourself. As a person, you easily build good relationships with students, guardians, and colleagues. Furthermore, you have good collaboration skills, are receptive, and can communicate and handle different situations in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. You take responsibility for your tasks and treat others in a accommodating and respectful way. We place great emphasis on your personal suitability.
