We collaborate to ensure children and young people develop and have a secure upbringing. We teach children to read, write, and calculate. We contribute to developing children's imagination and belief in their own abilities. We support children and young people in living independent lives. We have Sweden's most important job – our mission is to give young people hope for the future.

The Competence Centre for Multilingualism works to ensure that students receive instruction in their mother tongue as well as study guidance in their strongest language. Today, 38 languages are represented within the operations. We work with both municipal authorities and private entities.

We are looking for a mother tongue teacher in Swahili (Kongo dialect)!

Employment Type

Fixed-term special employment, part-time 20%. The scope may change. The employment period runs from 2026-08-17 to 2026-12-31.

Responsibilities

The role of a mother tongue teacher is a roaming position driven by student numbers. It requires the teacher to travel to various schools within the municipality – both centrally and to schools in the outer areas – to meet with students. Duties within this role may include: mother tongue instruction, study guidance, remote teaching, remote guidance, and support to the Reception Unit 'Hej Umeå' as a language supporter.

Mother Tongue Instruction

Instruction is conducted with students in groups or individually within the municipality's school units from preschool class to grade 9. Instruction takes place outside the student's regular schedule, typically in the afternoons. Students in preschool class to grade 3 receive in-person instruction at their home school. From grade 4, instruction may take place at another school. We offer a bus pass for travel between schools. Remote teaching may be included in the role, particularly for students in grade 2 at schools in the outer areas. Your work is highly independent and includes planning, implementation, grading, and evaluation of the instruction based on the Swedish national curriculum.

Study Guidance

Study guidance involves supporting students in grades 1–9 as well as those on the Language Introduction program at the upper secondary school. Study guidance can take place before, during, or after the student's regular lessons.

You will collaborate closely with the student's mentor and subject teachers who plan and conduct the lessons, while you provide support in the mother tongue to help the student achieve knowledge in various school subjects. You are flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances.

You also serve as a support in the reception of newly arrived children and students, which includes information meetings, orientation support, direct support, and mapping of newly arrived students' knowledge.

Qualifications

You have Swahili (Kongo) as your mother tongue and have documented language skills in this. You must have knowledge of Swedish equivalent to Swedish B/Swedish 2 and demonstrate very good digital skills. A teaching degree (Swedish or foreign) or other pedagogical experience is required. Documented knowledge of multiple languages or the ability to handle different dialects of Swahili (e.g., Kenya, Tanzania) is advantageous.

You are creative, independent, flexible, and stress-resistant. You are curious and eager to develop. As a person, you easily build relationships with staff, children, and guardians. You have good collaboration skills, are a good listener, and can handle different situations constructively. You take responsibility for your tasks and are accommodating in your interactions. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

Please attach a cover letter and CV written in Swedish. If you have a teaching license, please include it.

In accordance with the Act on Suitability Checks, an extract from the police record must be presented upon employment.
