We are thrilled that you are considering applying for a job with us! We handle municipal services for Västerbotten's smallest municipality by area. However, by population, we are the fourth largest, and here opportunities, community, and optimism for the future are bubbling up. With just a little over 20 minutes by train from Umeå, Vännäs is the perfect mix of simple, nature-oriented living and the bustling opportunities of a big city.
As an employee in our organization, you play a vital role and make a difference for the citizens. We build welfare together. We look forward to receiving your application!
Description
As a Waste Strategist, you work with a broad mandate covering the entire waste chain. You are part of the Infrastructure Department, which consists of 25 dedicated employees working close to the daily lives of the municipality's residents. We manage the municipality's tasks regarding waste and recycling, water and sewage, streets, parks, leisure activities, as well as GIS and surveying operations.
There is a lot happening in the waste sector right now, and as a Waste Strategist, you have significant influence on the municipality's development in this area. In 2026, we will introduce property-proximity collection for packaging waste, and you will be a key part of this implementation.
Responsibilities
You are responsible for the planning and follow-up of municipal collection, recycling, and treatment of waste and sludge. Your duties include:
- Planning investments and developing operations within waste and recycling.
- Developing and monitoring the waste plan, waste collection regulations, budget, and fees.
- Procuring and monitoring contracts within waste and recycling.
- Ensuring that the municipality's waste management complies with current legislation.
- Producing and reporting statistics within the waste sector.
- Monitoring developments in the waste sector.
- Informing the public, businesses, and politicians about current regulations, changes in the field, and encouraging increased recycling.
The role involves frequent contact with colleagues, contractors, politicians, and the public. You work independently and collaborate with colleagues within the working group, the department, accountants, and strategists within the municipality. Vännäs Municipality has a well-developed cooperation with other municipalities in the Umeå region, and many procurements and strategic documents are developed jointly. You will be a driving force in cooperation matters within your area.
Qualifications
You have several years of post-secondary education in fields such as environment, engineering, law, economics, or urban planning, or alternatively, longer professional experience that the employer deems equivalent. You have at least one year of professional experience within the waste sector, for example, in municipal waste management, waste contracting, or regulatory enforcement.
You handle legislation, contracts, and have many contacts in your work, so you must be able to express yourself well in Swedish, both orally and in writing. Experience in project management, legislative work, and public procurement is meritorious.
You drive your work towards set goals in a structured manner. To succeed in this role, you need to have good collaboration skills and be able to explain challenges and choices in a pedagogical way. A valid driver's license for a passenger car is required.
