The Department of Physics at Gothenburg University is located in central Gothenburg and has approximately 100 employees. Communication opportunities are good, both nationally and internationally. Research is focused on topics such as atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, spintronics, complex systems, and biophysics, and is conducted in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. Education at the department includes teaching in bachelor's and master's programs in physics, physics in teacher training, and courses in physics aimed at the general public. The Physics Center in Gothenburg, a close collaboration with three other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology, creates an innovative environment for all the department's researchers and students.

Job Responsibilities
We offer two PhD positions within the framework of the Horizon Europe MSCA-Doctoral Network “Autonomous Scanning Probe Microscopy for Life Sciences and Medicine powered by Artificial Intelligence (SPM4.0)”. This project is funded by the European Union (GA: 101168976). Information about the doctoral network can be found on the website https://spm40.eu/ (https://spm40.eu/).
We are looking for two PhD candidates at the Department of Physics at Gothenburg University. The candidates will work on the development of AI tools for image analysis, microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, near-field microscopy, smart microscopy, and active learning.
The research will be conducted in a group at Gothenburg University led by Giovanni Volpe. The group focuses on soft materials, optical tweezers, statistical physics, and machine learning.
The doctoral education encompasses four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. Within the framework of your PhD position, you may have departmental duties of a maximum of 20% of full-time distributed throughout the entire training period, which will then generate a corresponding extension of the training period. Departmental duties usually include teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels, but research and administration may also be included.
In accordance with MSCA regulations, the PhD candidate is obliged to work exclusively for the SPM4.0 doctoral network during the 36 months funded by the network's resources.
Eligibility
The candidate should preferably have a master's degree in physics, engineering, or related disciplines.
To be eligible for MSCA funding, the applicant must not have resided in Sweden for more than 12 months during the 3 years immediately preceding the reference date [Mobility requirement]. Additionally, the applicant must be within the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research career and must not have been awarded a doctoral degree [Early-stage researcher requirement].
We are looking for talented, motivated, and committed individuals. The candidate must be flexible and eager to work as part of a larger team, as well as have the ability to work independently and possess good communication skills in both written and spoken English.
The candidate must have documented experience in programming, machine learning, and AI tools.
For admission to doctoral education at the doctoral level, basic and, where applicable, the specific eligibility established in the general study plan for the doctoral subject is required.
Basic eligibility for doctoral education at the doctoral level is held by those who:
- have obtained a degree at the advanced level, or
- have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or
- have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
Specific eligibility is held by those who have:
- obtained a degree at the advanced level in a relevant* natural science subject, or
- completed course requirements of at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level in relevant* natural science subjects, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country, relevant to the planned education.* Relevant to the planned education at the doctoral level.
For specific eligibility, the applicant must also have a good command of English in both spoken and written form. As a guideline, 550 points on the TOEFL test (or 213 points on TOEFL-CBT, or 79 points on TOEFL-iBT) is required.
