Description of the Organization

The research group Experimental Neuroinflammation at the Department of Experimental Medical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine has offices and research facilities at the Biomedical Center in Lund.

The group consists of a handful of permanent staff (PhD students, postdocs, group leaders, and laboratory assistants) as well as several students and international guest researchers connected to its activities. Regular lab meetings, Journal Clubs, floor coffee breaks, team-building, and retreats contribute to creating a cohesive team and a pleasant atmosphere.

Project Description

The dissertation work is a collaboration between experimental and clinically active research groups. The projects investigate mechanisms behind neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on inflammation, dopaminergic signaling pathways, and bioactive lipids as potential mediators of treatment effects. The work combines basic research, clinical data, and epidemiology to understand how different interventions affect brain health. Additionally, new drug delivery strategies, such as nose-to-brain devices, are being developed to improve the access of therapeutic substances to the brain. The goal is to identify modifiable factors that can be used for prevention and more effective treatment.

Responsibilities and Duties

The main responsibilities of a PhD student are to engage in their doctoral education, and therefore you will be both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.

You will be responsible for planning, conducting, and analyzing experiments within projects studying biological mechanisms in depression, dementia, and neurodegenerative diseases. The tasks include measurements of biomarkers in blood and CSF, fMRI, mass spectrometry, immunohistochemistry, and large-scale epidemiological analyses using registry data.

The position may also include teaching or other departmental work, but no more than 20% of the working time. The work takes place in the research group Experimental Neuroinflammation, Lund University, with opportunities for collaboration with clinical and industrial partners.

Qualifications

Requirements for admission are:

• completed degree at the advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or in some other way acquired equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.
• good ability to benefit from doctoral education
• specific eligibility, as determined at the faculty level, for example:
• knowledge from XX higher education or equivalent education,
• specific professional experience
• necessary language skills or other conditions required by the education.

Requirements for employment are:

• Self-driven, Resilient, Collaborative, Initiative-taking, Stable, Structured, Independent, Creative, analytical and/or mathematical ability
• Good knowledge in neuroscience and biomedicine
• Experience in laboratory work with biomarkers, statistical/data analysis, and handling large datasets
• Experience in projects related to physical activity and analysis of data linked to movement, such as accelerometer data.
• Collaborative ability, structured and analytical skills
• Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

Meritorious for the position are:

• Experience in immunohistochemistry or multiplex-ELISA
• Knowledge of neuropsychiatric or neurodegenerative diseases
• Previous work with biomarker projects or registry-based epidemiological studies

Great emphasis will be placed on how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral education.
