The Eye Department

The Eye Department offers basic and to some extent highly specialized ophthalmic care for Gotland's more than 60,000 residents. The operation is conducted in close collaboration with other surgical and medical specialties. Continuous efforts are made to further develop the operation and thereby improve care for the population of Gotland.

We have approximately 13-14,000 visits per year where we perform outpatient services in general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and eyelid surgeries, as well as consultations for medical retina with injection services. The department has primary on-call responsibility during the day and standby on-call during part of the weekend.

Patients in need of highly specialized care are primarily referred to the eye clinics at St. Erik's Eye Hospital or Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala.

We have regularly returning consulting physicians with special expertise in pediatric ophthalmology, corneal diseases, cataract surgery, and plastic surgery, for example, for the operation of tumors, eyelids, tear ducts, and strabismus. We have about 3-4 specialists per week and 1-2 resident doctors. Our staff group includes roles such as ophthalmic nurse, nurse, nursing assistant, optometrist, and orthoptist. The clinic is well-equipped with, among other things, multi-spot laser, YAG laser, Humphrey perimetry, and OCT.

As a nurse, you will gain both great breadth and depth within your area of expertise as Visby Hospital, being the only acute hospital on the island, handles all eye patients on the island.

Your Responsibilities

The Eye Department at Visby Hospital is a small and well-functioning workplace. You will have varied tasks where there are great opportunities to develop your personal skills. We also work a lot in teams when you assist with, for example, cataract surgeries, post-operative care, injections, and when you perform preliminary examinations before doctor visits.

Based on your experience and educational background, you will perform independent measurements and various examinations of the eye such as visual field checks, pressure measurements, fundus photography, and vision checks. Telephone advice is also included in your tasks. It is of interest that after training you can perform injections in the eye, which is a significant part of our operations and a delegated task.

We work with the TakeCare journal system and Topcon and Haag Streit imaging systems.

Who Are You?

We are looking for you who are a trained ophthalmic nurse or nurse with experience or a strong interest in working in ophthalmology. You may also be an operating room nurse with an interest in eyes and also want to perform some tasks outside the operating room. As a general nurse, experience in outpatient care is an advantage.

We consider it a given that you have the ability and desire to be involved in developing the operation and that you are happy to contribute new ideas. In your interactions with patients, you are trustworthy and empathetic. You have good collaboration skills, are attentive, and have the ability to adapt your approach and attitude based on the individual and the situation.

Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability.
