Gardener at the Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden is a place where the diversity of the plant world is at the center. It is a scientific institution with botanical research and horticultural development work at a high international level. Throughout the garden's hundred-year history, plants from all over the world have found their place in our living collections, now cultivated in beautiful environments throughout the garden, in the arboretum, and in the greenhouses.
Every year, our 600,000 visitors experience something extraordinary that we hope will spark interest in the diversity of the plant world and the important conservation work related to it. The educational activities are aimed at both schools and educational actors in the form of lessons and training, as well as the general public through exhibitions, tours, and events.
The Botanical Garden is one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe, with around 75 hectares and 20,000 unique plants from more than 130 countries. In our workplace, all employees are important parts of the whole, and together we work towards common goals, with Swedish as our working language.
Right now, a lot is happening within the Botanical Garden's operations.
We are building new greenhouses that will be ready for occupancy in 2028, undergoing a generational shift, and investing in exciting new conservation projects for the future. Because of this, we are now announcing several positions and looking for you who want to be part of this fantastic workplace.
Job Description
Do you have a burning interest in plants and a strong desire to deepen your knowledge of cultivation and plant propagation? Then you might be the one we are looking for! We are looking for an engaged and curious gardener who wants to develop with us. As part of our team in Wild Flora, you will work with some of the garden's most central and exciting areas. Your focus will be on our alpine cultivation and cold propagation – where many of our plants' life journeys begin. Eventually, you will also have horticultural responsibility for parts of the rock garden. You will also work with our world-leading collection of legumes and the Dionysia collection, where you will be an important backup to our area-responsible gardeners. Other tasks beyond cultivation may include tours, participating in projects, and managing greenhouse technology.
At the Botanical Garden in Gothenburg, we are building a sustainable future – where both plants and people can grow and thrive.
Requirements:
Education:
- Horticultural engineer or equivalent three-year education, preferably with a focus on cultivation.
- At least two years of vocational training with a focus on gardening, cultivation, or garden management (or other relevant education assessed to correspond to this in combination with longer professional experience).
- Driving license B.
Experience:
- Experience in previous work in a garden (preferably botanical) or park, at least three years.
- Experience in previous work with cultivation and plant propagation, at least three years.
- Experience with database work, inventory, personal maintenance responsibility, and plant protection training is an advantage.
Other:
- Good digital competence.
- The working language is Swedish, but knowledge of English is a requirement.
- Experience in managing projects and taking responsibility for administrative tasks related to the work area is an advantage.
As a person, you are:
- Curious and eager to learn more about plants and cultivation.
- Flexible and quick to take on new tasks.
- A team player with good collaboration skills – but also self-driven.
- Meticulous, structured, and good at completing what you start.
- Unpretentious and generous with your knowledge.
- Good at communicating in speech and writing.
