PhD Positions in Space Physics at Umeå University

The Department of Physics conducts strong and expanding research with various focuses, such as organic electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, space physics, and theoretical physics. The department is part of KBC, the Chemical-Biological Center at Umeå University. We have a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and excellent access to modern instrumentation and infrastructure for analysis.
PhD Positions
The Department of Physics at Umeå University is seeking three PhD candidates for three projects in space physics.
The projects involve advanced numerical simulations and analysis of space data. The projects are fully funded for four years and lead to a PhD in Computational Physics. The application deadline is May 23, 2025. The start date is September 1, 2025, or by agreement.
Project Descriptions
Here is a brief description of the three projects:
- PhD Position 1: Plasma interaction with Mercury's magnetosphere. The goal of this PhD project is to achieve a comprehensive understanding of how the solar wind interacts with Mercury during extreme space weather events. Project leader is Shahab Fatemi ([email protected]).
- PhD Position 2: Auroras on Ganymede. This project aims to study the auroras on Ganymede and their significance for auroral research. Project leader is Herbert Gunell ([email protected]).
- PhD Position 3: Geysers on Icy Moons. The project focuses on studying the interaction between geysers and plasma around Enceladus and Europa. Project leader is Shahab Fatemi ([email protected]).
