Kemikum at Stockholm University is hiring a research assistant

Kemikum is, with approximately 200 employees, one of the largest institutions at the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University.

A significant part of the teaching activities occurs at the undergraduate level with courses in fundamental physical, inorganic, organic, and analytical chemistry. Teaching at the advanced level focuses on master's programs in sustainable chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry.

The research activities at the department primarily involve studies of materials and include various classes such as ceramics, glass, porous materials, and soft materials. Projects often involve synthesis and characterization using various methods; X-ray, neutron diffraction, electron microscopy, solid-state NMR, and computer modeling of materials with potential for various applications. Research activities in analytical chemistry focus on developing advanced analytical techniques for studying organic compounds and biomolecules.

Job Responsibilities

The project aims to develop a new method for structure determination of difficult-to-crystallize organic compounds in very small amounts. By combining electron crystallography with nano-crystalline fungi, analysis from nanograms to picograms is enabled. We are developing automated techniques for data collection, cryo-electron diffraction protocols, and screening of new crystalline fungi. The goal is a rapid, accessible method with broad applications in pharmaceuticals, natural products, forensics, and food.

The work will involve synthesis and characterization of metal-organic frameworks for further application in this crystalline fungi method. You will work under the supervision of PhD students or postdocs in Professor Xiaodong Zou's group.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. Particular emphasis will be placed on experience in the synthesis and characterization of metal-organic compounds. Basic knowledge of hydrothermal synthesis, crystallography, and/or electron microscopy is an advantage. You must have strong collaboration and communication skills, be self-motivated, and a good team player. You should also have excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

About the Employment

The position is full-time and is limited to six weeks during the period from 2025-06-02 to 2025-08-29. Start date by agreement.
