At the Department of Cultural Sciences, we conduct research and teaching in various aesthetic sciences such as film, art, visual studies, musicology, gender studies, cultural studies, children and youth culture, and ethnology. The Department of Cultural Sciences has about 55 employees and approximately 900 students per year. Our premises are centrally located in Gothenburg, at Humanisten, Renströmsgatan 6.
We are now seeking a temporary university lecturer in art and visual studies who can start on August 1. Part-time employment at 50% for 12 months.

Subject Description
Art history constitutes an interdisciplinary research field that examines the significance of art, image, and environment in both historical and contemporary contexts. Through studies of different epochs, such as antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, students apply fundamental theories and methodological tools to analyze visual and creative expressions in a globalized context.
The subject offers a broad humanistic education and trains the critical eye, making art historical competence sought after in a range of professional fields, from the cultural and museum sector to media, tourism, and the creative industry.
Job Responsibilities
The job responsibilities include teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels within art and visual studies. You will also be involved in course development and administrative tasks, such as being responsible for all or parts of courses and working with the university's learning platform. Additionally, teaching within the department's bachelor's program with elements of art and visual studies may occur.
The courses included in the teaching cover art from the 20th century to contemporary art, as well as art historical theories and methods.
Professional development (10%) is included in the employment.
Eligibility
Eligibility for employment as a teacher is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 (link here) as well as the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations found here: Governing Documents | University of Gothenburg (gu.se) under Personnel-Handling Regulations. Eligible for employment as a university lecturer is one who has obtained a doctoral degree in art and visual studies or another relevant subject area, and has demonstrated pedagogical skills or has equivalent scientific competence or other skills that are significant in relation to the subject matter of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.
Applicants should have a specialization in art, architecture, and design from the 20th century to the present, good knowledge of the art market, and the ability to teach art historical theories and methods.
Previous experience in teaching and supervision within art and visual studies is meritorious.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment criteria for employment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance (see link above) and the University of Gothenburg's own employment regulations. In the appointment process, great emphasis will be placed on pedagogical skills.
The applicant's ability to collaborate and administrative skills will be highly valued. In the selection process, particularly documented merits in the following areas will be considered:
- Pedagogical skills within the subject area, for example through planning and implementation of education, including supervision and examination, at various types of courses and levels.
- Very good ability to teach in both Swedish and English.
- Ability to lead and administer teaching, such as course responsibility.
