Department of Animal Biosciences

Join our innovative research team in spider silk and help transform the textile industry with groundbreaking, sustainable materials! Our research group is dedicated to uncovering how spiders spin their silk, which has enabled us to develop a biomimetic method for spinning artificial spider silk. Recently, we achieved a breakthrough that allowed us to produce kilograms of spider silk proteins, which has taken our ability to refine and optimize spinning methods far beyond what was previously possible. We are now looking for a skilled research assistant who wants to help create the world's first biomimetic spider silk yarn.

About the job

You will be part of a strong team consisting of several PhD students, postdocs, and researchers working on various projects related to biotechnological methods for the production of recombinant silk proteins, their characterization, fiber spinning, protein design, and material characterization. Your work will focus on spinning artificial spider silk, as well as supporting researchers in investigating how different parameters affect the mechanical properties of silk. The work requires creativity and innovative thinking to solve technical challenges. In addition to basic biochemical knowledge, technical experience is highly valuable, as you will participate in the design and testing of custom equipment optimized for silk proteins. We expect you to be actively engaged in the project, collaborate with the team, participate in journal clubs and meetings, write reports, and maintain a positive attitude. You will plan and conduct experimental work together with colleagues, as well as participate in data analysis and interpretation. You are also expected to present your work in both oral and written form.

Your background

Key qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in a relevant field such as materials science, biotechnology, protein biochemistry, bioprocesses, mechanical engineering, or polymer technology. Alternatively, several years of work experience in any of these areas.
  • Previous experience in fiber spinning or documented technical skills in related areas is an advantage.
  • A basic understanding of what proteins are, how they are produced and handled is strongly recommended.
  • Very good English skills in both spoken and written form, at least level C1.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Positive and ambitious: you are committed and want to contribute to groundbreaking research and development.
  • Detail-oriented: you will be introduced to producing and handling micrometer-thin fibers, which requires great sensitivity, steady hands, and attention to detail.
  • Collaborative: you thrive in team settings and communicate well with colleagues.
  • Time-conscious: you manage your time effectively and deliver on schedule.

If you are passionate about advanced materials and want to be part of a revolutionary project, we encourage you to apply!
