Job Advertisement: Zoological Collection Expert

The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a government agency tasked by the government to promote knowledge, research, and interest in our world. The agency is a prominent research institution and Sweden's largest museum. For over 200 years, the museum has collected objects and data and conducted research on life on Earth. The collections contain more than 11 million plants, animals, fungi, environmental samples, minerals, and fossils. All research and knowledge are shared in exhibitions, Cosmonova, and in activities at the museum and digitally.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In this position, you will be responsible for caring for and developing our scientific zoological collections, with a particular focus on dry-prepared materials, such as mounted insects. Your main tasks include organizing and quality-assuring existing objects, registering them in our database, and preparing and taking care of newly collected objects and donations.

You will also work with object photography, handle loan requests, and provide support to guest researchers. The role may involve shared responsibility for specific taxonomic groups, and you may also contribute to our public activities. There may also be opportunities for fieldwork and collaboration within the museum's broader mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

To succeed in this position, you need to have;

  • A degree in biology, with a focus on systematic zoology or equivalent
  • Experience working with scientific zoological collections
  • Experience working with dry-mounted entomological specimens
  • Experience working in a database
  • Knowledge of natural science collections and their significance
  • Knowledge of taxonomic and nomenclatural principles in zoology
  • Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written

We consider it an advantage if you also have;

  • A PhD in zoological systematics or equivalent
  • Experience in object photography
  • Experience in fieldwork with collecting
  • Experience in preparing and processing zoological specimens, such as insects
  • Species knowledge where there is particular demand in the unit
  • Language skills beyond Swedish and English
  • Driver's license B

You need to have good collaboration skills and be both structured and meticulous.
